Step 1: Determine your goal. Is to relax, organize, or work?

Step 2: Find a quiet corner, secluded area or recessed spot in your home.

Step 3: Make the space with your “hero piece” — either a chair, desk or bench — as the anchor. Decorate the walls around it with wallpaper, paintings, or a drop pendant light fixture.

Step 4: Complete the space with a floor lamp, plant and/or small table and decor objects. Don’t forget a unique final touch, such as a graphic rug, for that wow factor!

Expert tip: A ruler goes a long way when hanging. Just because “eyeballing it” is easy, doesn’t mean it’s effective.

You’re probably already using up every square inch of counter space–but what about the space under your counter? Make the most of it by installing pretty, functional glass jars under your shelves.

How to do it:

• Find three to five small glass jars with lids. Jelly jars are perfect for this DIY project.
• Nail the lids to the underside of a shelf and simply screw on the jar.

Expert tip: These small jars are perfect for your office space or a craft room. Just fill each one will paperclips, tacks or ribbon!

Always scrambling to figure out dinner? Just make a creative menu board that serves double duty as a helpful planning tool and wall art.

How to do it:

Expert tip: Dress up a plain board by customizing it to your space. Spray paint and printed paper should do the trick.

The next time you’re hosting a party, display snacks and store condiments using empty muffin tins.

How to do it:

• If you’re serving up snack foods, fill empty muffin tins with candies, chocolates and nuts. If you’re spending the afternoon grilling for friends, fill each tin with condiments like ketchup, onions and relish.

Expert tip: Line the muffin tins with cupcake wrappers for easy cleanup.

Can’t quite figure out how to store your scarves? Hang multiple scarves (organized by color, perhaps?) with shower rings on plastic hangers.

How to do it:

• Snap plastic or metal shower rings onto the base of a hanger.
• Loop your scarves through the rings to create a space-saving display!

Expert tip: Shower rings either slide or snap onto rods; for this project, you want the ones that snap on.

Tired of soapy sponges cluttering up your kitchen? By keeping a shallow dish near your sink, you can clean dishes without making a mess.

How to do it:

• Find a shallow tray that’s large enough to hold a dish brush, a sponge and soap. (Try this hammered soap dish from Pottery Barn.)

Expert tip: Remember to sanitize sponges with a quick zap in the microwave. If you’ve been using yours for a couple of weeks, now is the time to replace it.

Keep your kitchen drawers and counters clutter free by organizing knives on a magnetic strip.

How to do it:

Install hanging magnetic strips above your counter space to easily store your cutlery. (We love this affordable option from Macy’s.)

Expert tip: If you’d rather keep your knives out of plain sight, consider installing the strip inside of a kitchen drawer instead.

It isn’t the holiday season, but you still have plenty of gifts to wrap. Make your gift-wrapping sessions easier by sliding spools of ribbon onto an empty paper towel holder.

How to do it:

• Stack your spools of ribbon on a paper towel holder to store them vertically.
• Remember to tape down ribbon ends when finished to avoid a tangled mess.

Expert tip: Organizing your ribbon collection by color makes finding the perfect spool easy.

Resist the urge to hang up your favorite sweater–hangers can cause holes to form in the shoulders. A better bet? Fold and stack your favorite sweaters.

How to do it:

Stack your folded sweaters in crates or on a shelf in your closet. Not only will you save your sweaters, but you’ll free up your hangers for other closet items.

Expert tip: Remember not to stack sweaters more than 5 high. This will prevent any from falling over if you pull from the bottom.
