How the Historic Number of Women in the Senate Will Benefit You
You’ve probably already heard that there’s now a historic number of women in the senate following the 2012 election–20, to be exact, which is more than ever before in U.S. history.
But have you thought about what that stat actually means for you? If not you should; this historic milestone could dramatically improve the quality of your life, perhaps sooner than you think.
Throughout the presidential campaign we heard a lot about reproductive rights, healthcare, and jobs–all issues that directly impact our well-being–and these hot-button election issues will continue to be debated and decided upon in the months to come. By having a strong female contingent in the senate (1 in 5 senators are women) we as women can expect more legislation that protects our rights.
As writer Suzi Parker points out in the Washington Post, ” With more women in Congress, men may have greater difficulty passing anti-woman bills when they have to look their female colleagues in the eye and justify their reasoning.”
I can’t wait to see how these women start out their term in senate. Here’s to hoping good things start to come our way soon.
