The Birth Control Pill for Men May Actually Happen

Ask me why I’m smiling.

It’s because Scottish scientists have just delivered some news that has made my entire week: The birth control pill for men may become a reality in the not-so-distant future.

Those scientists, bless their hearts, have identified a gene — which they call Katnal 1 — that’s responsible for sperm production. Their idea is to formulate a pill that would isolate that gene and suppress sperm so that they won’t mature (as in, won’t be able to make babies). It’s a non-hormonal approach, so pill-popping dudes can bypass side effects like mood swings and acne. You know, the side effects that women on the pill have to deal with.

So, does this bring us any closer to a non-hormonal birth control pill for women? Scottish scientists, I’m talking to you.

What do you think of the idea of a birth control pill for men? Think your guy would take it?
